Health Tips for 2018
As a Massage Therapist, I see a lot of people who injure themselves when they start a new exercise routine. If possible, I highly recommend finding a good trainer who can help you choose the right equipment, weights, and classes for your fitness level. They can also watch you and make sure your form is good while you exercise, which will help prevent injuries and develop your muscles more evenly. Often people experience pain after starting back to the gym because they are developing muscles differently on different sides of the body because their form is off.
You should also be sure to warm up before you exercise, and stretch and cool down when you’re done. These simple steps will help prevent injuries as well. And if you find yourself injured, remember RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation, and see your Doctor. For soreness and tight muscles, I really like contrast therapy: heat AND ice. Start with a hot soak in a bathtub, hot tub, or hot shower, then ice the sore areas when you’re done. Heat increases blood flow and relaxes muscles, and ice will reduce swelling and inflammation. And before starting a new exercise plan it’s always a good idea to consult your Primary Health Care Provider.
